Your Role as Title IX Coordinator and Associate Dean of Students  

Reporting to the Vice President for Student Affairs, the Title IX Coordinator and Associate Dean of Students will have primary responsibility for managing the day-to-day responsibilities associated with the University’s compliance obligations under Title IX of the Education Amendments of the 1972 Civil Rights Act and the Violence Against Women Act Reauthorization of 2012 (VAWA) and New York State 129B.  

The Title IX Coordinator and Associate Dean of Students will oversee the collection of relevant facts related to any reported Title IX incident and assess whether a further review or investigation is necessary to ensure the safety of the impacted student, staff member, third party, and/or the community. As a neutral party, the Title IX Coordinator and Associate Dean of Students will coordinate teams tasked with investigations and adjudications of alleged discrimination. In this capacity, the Title IX Coordinator and Associate Dean of Students (or appropriate designee ) will notify and interview complainants, respondents, and witnesses; complete investigation reports; obtain and review relevant documents; issue factual findings; and make findings of responsibility, as necessary. The Title IX Coordinator and Associate Dean of Students will collaborate with other staff members to manage interim accommodations, as needed, and collaborate with other University offices to ensure that University constituents are aware of options and resources for reporting and filing complaints alleging sexual misconduct and/or violations of Title IX; and create mandatory and other training programs and educational outreach for the campus community.  

Key Responsibilities as Title IX :  

 

  • Serve as the Title IX Coordinator and Associate Dean of Students for the Canisius University community, including all cases involving faculty, staff, students, and vendors.  
  • Receive and respond promptly to inquiries and discrimination complaints from campus constituents and third parties, providing a fair and neutral process for all parties.
  • Collaborate with appropriate campus offices, partners, and local community organizations to review or investigate any reported Title IX incident and provide, as needed, appropriate supportive measures.
  • Develop an investigation plan for each Title IX complaint; coordinate prompt and equitable investigations and make findings of responsibility as a leader of an investigation-adjudication team.
  • Supervise the preparation of investigation reports in consultation with legal counsel, with findings of fact and responsibility.
  • Recruit, train, and supervise staff/faculty to serve as support persons (i.e., investigators, panel members, etc.), as needed.
  • Utilize a data management system to organize and track Title IX inquiries, complaints, and investigations.
  • Review and ensure the university policies, procedures, protocols, and practices comply with Title IX and VAWA regulations and other applicable state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Provide ongoing consultation and technical assistance on Title IX for all campus constituents; develop and disseminate educational materials and in-service training tailored to faculty, staff, and students.
  • Prepare an annual report on the number of complaints, their nature, and disposition. Identify patterns and make recommendations.
  • Respond to Title IX-related matters on an on-call basis as needed.  

 

Key Responsibilities as Associate Dean of Students:  

 

  • Provide strategic leadership for Canisius Student Wellness initiatives. This includes leveraging collaboration with colleagues to conceptualize, plan, and implement programs that support comprehensive student well-being in the spirit of the Jesuit value cura personalis .  
  • Collaboratively with the Director of the Student Health Center and the Director of the Counseling Center, the Associate Dean of Students will foster and maintain a culture of assessment, ensuring division and university leadership are equipped with appropriate data regarding student participation in wellness programs and services for quarterly board meetings, monthly Student Affairs Leadership meetings, and other decision and discussion points dictated by the academic calendar  
  • Work directly with all University community members to provide training related to student well-being and promote engagement with our wellness services, programs, and strategie

 

What You Need to Succeed:  

Qualifications:  

 

Education  

  • Master’s Degree or JD required (higher education administration or other relevant discipline is preferred for the master’s degree)  

 

Experience  

  • Minimum of 4-6 years of progressively responsible experience in a related field  
  • Demonstrated experience conducting investigations alleging discrimination and/or sexual misconduct  
  • Knowledge of and experience with issues related to gender based violence  
  • Experience in higher education, particularly in the areas of student life and gender equity, is strongly preferred  

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities  

  • Demonstrated knowledge of current state and federal laws and regulations related to Title IX, Campus SAVE Act, Clery Act, NYS 129B, and VAWA is required  
  • Knowledge of compliance for educational institutions receiving federal assistance  
  • Ability to manage multiple, ongoing, and complex caseload of Title IX-related incidents and complaints  
  • Excellent judgment, personal maturity, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to remain a neutral party  
  • Effective project management, organization, and analytical skills  
  • Strong presentation and facilitation skills with an emphasis on education and training for a variety of constituencies  
  • Strong written communication skills  
  • Excellent attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to deal with confidential and sensitive information  
  • Ability to build relationships and establish collaborative partnerships across the institution and peer institutions  
  • Maintenance of professional qualifications through ongoing training and professional development
