Position Description:

The Department of Epidemiology at the University of Iowa College of Public Health is seeking applicants for a postdoctoral scholar in cancer epidemiology. 

Responsibilities include:

• Perform cancer surveillance and epidemiologic research

• Assess the patterns and trends of cancer in Iowa using Iowa Cancer Registry data and other sources

• Collaborate with biostatisticians on modeling initiatives to identify drivers of cancer trends in Iowa

• Present research findings at national, regional and local meetings of scientific and cancer control organizations

• Disseminate research findings to the general public

• Maintain Iowa Cancer Registry-based data tools and provide guidance to research collaborators on use of the tools

• Contribute to funding applications

• Develop first-authored and co-authored manuscripts and presentations

The department of Epidemiology in the University of Iowa College of Public Health seeks a highly qualified and motivated scholar to join a research program in the areas of cancer prevention and control. The initial appointment is a full-time postdoctoral research scholar position for two years.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with faculty, staff, and students within the College of Public Health, the Iowa Cancer Registry, and the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, as well as several other colleges, departments, and centers around the university. A specific plan of research and mentorship will be defined for the successful applicant based on their interests and capabilities, and mentorship includes an advisor with successful research experience and a track record of research funding.

This position is available beginning July 1, 2025.

The successful candidate will join a team of dedicated professionals working to examine high cancer rates in Iowa. Education Requirement:

• PhD in epidemiology, public health or a related field.

Required Qualifications:

• Strong communication skills, both written and oral

• Strong data analysis skills, including experience with statistical software (SAS, R)

• Demonstrated ability to prepare manuscripts, reports, data visualizations, posters/presentations, and other documents of a technical and scientific nature 

• Experience completing human subjects (IRB) new project and continuing review/modification

• Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives

Desirable Qualifications:

• Grant preparation experience

• Experience with analysis of cancer registry data, including use of SEER*Stat 

• Data visualization expertise, preferably with Tableau

• Demonstrated experience with writing reports and presenting data and information to general audiences

• Evidence of effective public relations activities
