Job Description

Nature of Work

Under the general supervision of the Epidemiology Unit Manager of the Health Statistics Center (HSC), this position functions at the full-performance level to conduct epidemiological investigations and analysis of vital event data and report vital statistics.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Analyze birth, marriage, and divorce data from HSC's Vital Statistics System (VSS) using SAS programming methods.
  • Produce annual vital statistics at both the state and county levels, and assist in writing the annual vital statistics report.
  • Develop graphs, tables, and other data visualizations that clearly and accurately display vital statistics for use in presentations, reports, and data requests.
  • Produce various materials including:
  • Surveillance reports
  • Epidemiological reports
  • Statistical briefs
  • Infographics
  • PowerPoint presentations
  • Health-related fact sheets regarding vital statistics
  • Conduct special epidemiological investigations and studies of birth data as assigned by the Epidemiology Manager, Office Director, or BPH Commissioner.
  • Provide technical assistance to internal and external partners and other HSC stakeholders regarding vital statistics.
  • Respond in a timely manner to statistical analysis requests assigned by the Epidemiology Manager, including those from other offices, bureaus, and external partners such as researchers.
  • Collaborate with other HSC epidemiologists on group projects.
  • Present findings and trends at local, state, and national conferences, meetings, and webinars to inform partners on vital statistics.

Minimum Qualifications

Training: Master's degree in epidemiology, public health, biology, physical, behavioral , natural, or veterinary sciences from an accredited college or university.

OR

Graduation from an accredited school of nursing with state licensure and three years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in conducting epidemiology.

Substitution: Bachelor's degree in biology, physical, behavioral,or natural sciences from an accredited college or university, AND two years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in conducting epidemiology, including disease investigation, risk assessment or environmental epidemiology may substitute for the required training.

Other Information

A Master's degree with a major in Mathematics OR a Bachelor's degree in mathematics and two (2) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in conducting epidemiology, including disease investigation, risk assessment, or environmental epidemiology or conducting collection and assessment of qualitative and quantitative data for research in epidemiology and prevention services may substitute for the required training.
