Role Overview
The Production Editor plays a key role in managing the editorial process for assigned scholarly journals, ensuring high-quality content and supporting the societies’ missions to advance the agronomic, crop, environmental, and soil sciences for a diverse and growing audience. This position combines editorial review, process coordination, and direct author support to deliver seamless journal production and publication.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee and streamline the production of assigned journals, prioritizing quality and effective communication with various stakeholders.
Review and edit scholarly articles for accuracy, consistency, and compliance with publishing standards.
Communicate directly with authors to clarify issues and facilitate timely resolutions.
Coordinate workflow and production schedules in collaboration with internal teams and partner publishers.
Track article milestones and maintain production timelines.
Contribute to policy development, workflow improvements, and author/editor support initiatives.
Ensure all content adheres to copyright and licensing requirements, and supports compliance efforts.
Additional Responsibilities
Copyedit articles and support editorial tasks as needed.
Assist other staff as required, including cross-training to support business continuity and team coverage.
Provide operational support with manuscript management systems.
Works under supervision of the Associate Director of Publications.
Collaborates closely with Publications staff.
Supports journal editorial board members and authors throughout the manuscript review and publication process.
No direct supervision of staff or volunteers.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (publishing, communications, science, or related discipline).
At least 2 years of experience in scholarly publishing, ideally within agronomy, crop science, environmental science, soil science, or another STM field.
Strong editorial skills with meticulous attention to detail and demonstrated accuracy in reviewing scholarly content.
Proven ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
Effective communication abilities and experience working independently and in teams.
Familiarity with publishing software, digital submission systems, and peer review processes.
Solid understanding of copyright law, licensing, and permissions.
Positive, adaptable approach in a fast-paced environment.
Special Skills
Skilled in Microsoft Office and image editing applications.
Familiarity with editorial style guides (APA or similar).
Experience with MathType and Adobe Acrobat Pro.
Language and Communication
Ability to interpret complex documents and respond effectively to sensitive inquiries.
Capable of delivering presentations and engaging with diverse audiences on complex or controversial topics.
