Grassroots Organizer / Community Outreach

TITLE: Grassroots Organizer / Community Outreach

GENERAL DESCRITPION:
Advances the legislative, public policy and political goals and objectives of the Association. 

ACCOUNTABILITY:
Accountable to the Director of the Division of Legislation.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  1. As the grassroots organizer & community outreach:
    • Attends Regional Council meetings and works in collaboration with the Councils to target and advance goals and objectives of the Association.
    • Works and organizes with outside organizations to maintain, expand, and energize MNA’s grassroots organizing efforts specifically to advance MNA’s public policy agenda.
    • Provides support for community/grassroots and outreach activities of the MNA local bargaining units.
    • Manage, grow and activate public community support for safe staffing legislation in Massachusetts, specifically among seniors, advocacy, consumer and patient groups.
    • Organize the grassroots political activities of the Association, including political campaigns, issues campaigns and membership education and mobilization.
    • Outreach and activate public community support among seniors, advocacy, union, consumer and patient groups.
    • Assist in coordinating grassroots constituent lobbying activities, postcard and petition drives, and letter writing campaigns.
    • Assist with community organizing/outreach for local units in contract negotiations and organizing.
    • Write updates for the MassNurse and website as needed. 
    • Keeps informed of legislative and political trends, issues and current events, especially those affecting the health care industry.
    • Coordinate MNA’s outreach efforts to increase general community support for safe staffing.
    • Identify outreach opportunities and arrange logistics.
    • Ensure necessary staff and materials at events.
    • Attend events/meetings as needed.
    • Provides staff expertise in carrying out goals of the MNA.
  2. Provides staff services to MNA in carrying out the goals of MNA’s Division of Labor Action at the local level by:
    • Assisting in organizing local units.
    • Work with local unit leadership to improve and maintain local unit organization, membership recruitment and communication systems.
    • Evaluate local unit’s needs for educational programs and provide as appropriate, or arrange through other Association resources.
    • Assist members in utilizing the resources of the Association.
    • Interpreting the goals and programs of the Association to local unit members.
    • Reporting on local unit activities and needs to their Division Director, MNA staff and members where appropriate.
    • Keeps informed of economic trends, Labor Board decisions, general trends in labor relations, especially those affecting the health care industry.
  3. Participate in MNA staff meetings, serves on staff committees as requested and submits activity reports in a timely manner.
  4. Participates and assists the Board of Directors as assigned by the Director.
  5. Assists and participates in MNA Conventions.
  6. Acts as a resource on all MNA programs and activities.
  7. Perform other duties as requested.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Experience in grassroots organizing/community outreach.
  2. Proven track record in outreach and activism of organizations and constituencies.
  3. Proven ability to educate and stimulate groups in the area of grassroots/political and legislative action.
  4. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  5. Effective public speaker.
  6. Bachelor’s degree with emphasis on Government, Politics, and/or Public Policy or Health Care Policy preferred.
  7. Strong computer background in Windows, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Access, Publisher).
