As a Data Scientist, you will work closely with IT, business stakeholders, and the Enterprise Architecture & Innovation team to build analytical models, evaluate data quality, explore patterns and trends, and contribute to the development of data-driven products. You will help shape how UniFirst uses data for forecasting, optimization, automation, and operational efficiency.

This position is hands-on and collaborative, offering exposure to a wide range of domains including supply chain, finance, customer analytics, workforce planning, and AI-powered applications.

Responsibilities:

  • Explore and analyze structured and unstructured datasets to uncover trends, patterns, and actionable insights.
  • Build statistical, predictive, and machine learning models to support initiatives such as forecasting, optimization, classification, and clustering.
  • Work with partners across the organization to translate business questions into analytical approaches and deliver meaningful results.
  • Prepare clean, high-quality datasets for analysis using Python, SQL, and cloud-based tools.
  • Implement reproducible analytical workflows using notebooks, pipelines, and version-controlled code.
  • Evaluate model performance using appropriate metrics and iterate to improve accuracy, robustness, and interpretability.
  • Create clear visualizations, dashboards, and presentations to communicate findings to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with Enterprise Architects, Data Engineers, and AI Engineers to integrate analytical models into operational systems or AI-enabled workflows.
  • Support experimentation, prototyping, and research into emerging data science methods and tools.
  • Ensure analytical work complies with corporate governance, data privacy standards, and responsible AI principles.
Qualifications

Entry-level candidates with the appropriate education will be considered.

  • Academic or project experience with statistical modeling, machine learning, or predictive analytics.
  • Proficiency in Python (pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn, etc.) and/or R for data analysis.
  • Experience working with relational databases and writing SQL queries.
  • Familiarity with data visualization tools (e.g., matplotlib, seaborn, Power BI, Tableau).
  • Understanding of model evaluation techniques and best practices.
  • Experience cleaning, transforming, and manipulating real-world datasets.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.

Preferred:

  • Experience with cloud-based data platforms (Azure, AWS, or GCP), particularly Azure ML or Azure Data Lake.
  • Exposure to MLOps, experiment tracking, or model lifecycle management.
  • Knowledge of natural language processing, clustering, optimization, or time-series analysis.
  • Familiarity working with APIs, data pipelines, or integration tools.
  • Experience presenting insights to stakeholders or contributing to cross-functional projects.
  • Prior internship experience at UniFirst or a similar company strongly preferred.

Required Education:

  • Master’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Analytics, Applied Mathematics, or a related quantitative field.

Preferred Education:

  • Coursework or capstone experience directly related to machine learning, AI, or applied modeling.

The estimated annual salary for this position ranges from $68,121 to $85,000. Actual compensation will vary based on factors including but not limited to the candidate’s skills, experience, and qualifications.
