Career Coach - Job Description

About Us

The Collective Blueprint is helping Memphis become a city where all young adults can thrive. Founded in 2017 to support the ~45,000 local young adults out of work and school, we are increasing socioeconomic mobility through:

  • Career-Focused Training : As Memphis’ go-to model for supporting opportunity youth, we facilitate young adults’ entry into in-demand careers via school-readiness training, ongoing coaching, monthly stipends, free therapy, internships, employment support, and lifelong access to a well-connected network. At our founding, the local community college completion rate was around 5%, with limited economic outcomes. We now have a 70% completion rate, and our alumni have achieved 150% wage growth—with zero debt.

  • Innovation : The current employment and education systems fail many young adults. We build coalitions to address inequities and transform the city’s landscape—leading citywide economic development planning and driving a visionary policy agenda with hundreds of nonprofit partners.

  • Advocacy : We are igniting a movement toward economic justice in Memphis. We position young adults as leaders and advocates by training them in participatory democracy and supporting their campaigns for policy agendas that create lasting change.

Our work uniquely focuses on both individual support and systemic change. We were founded by and for young adults, and we center those most proximate to the challenges we address. In just five years, we have reached hundreds directly and impacted thousands more. This blueprint is becoming a model for national change.

Position Responsibilities

The Career Coach provides targeted support to young adults as they navigate life beyond and outside of our core programming. This role focuses on helping participants make meaningful progress in their career journeys through employment coaching, post-program follow-up, and individualized support in areas that fall outside of traditional programming.

The Career Coach builds strong, sustained relationships with each young adult and offers coaching that is tailored to their evolving needs. This includes job search preparation, career exploration, workplace readiness, and goal-setting. Additionally, the coach provides responsive support around barriers such as transportation, housing stability, mental health referrals, or navigating adult responsibilities—ensuring each participant has a solid foundation for long-term success.

A great Career Coach is proactive, highly resourceful, and deeply committed to supporting young adults through the uncertainty of early adulthood. They are excellent at building trust, pushing toward outcomes, and staying consistent even when life circumstances shift.

The Career Coach is accountable for helping young adults move into career-aligned employment, post-secondary opportunities, or other measurable life milestones, and for being a steady, informed guide throughout the journey. Key responsibilities include:

Employment Coaching & Career Support (40%)

  • Build strong, trusting relationships with young adults during and after participation in our core programs, and with participants referred for employment-only support
  • Provide individualized employment coaching focused on job search strategy, resume writing, interview preparation, and workplace readiness
  • Help young adults navigate real-time challenges in the workplace and prepare for long-term success in their careers
  • Support participants in identifying career goals and making progress toward career-aligned employment

Coaching Session Facilitation & Resource Navigation (30%)

  • Develop and facilitate individual and small-group coaching sessions based on participant needs
  • Lead or support career-readiness workshops and job readiness skill-building
  • Guide young adults through resources related to transportation, life skills, and social-emotional development
  • Offer coaching that is flexible and responsive to real-world, evolving life circumstances

Collaboration & Partnership (15%)

  • Work closely with TCB’s Persistence Coaches and broader Programs Team to align supports across the participant experience
  • Coordinate with the Business Development team to improve career pathway alignment and job placement outcomes
  • Engage with external partners (e.g., workforce agencies, schools, service providers) to connect participants to opportunities and resources

Progress Tracking & Outcomes Monitoring (15%)

  • Maintain consistent, timely documentation of coaching sessions, participant progress, and milestones
  • Track outcomes such as job attainment, retention, school enrollment/completion, certifications, and other stability indicators
  • Use data to reflect on progress, identify barriers, and adjust coaching approaches

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated passion for helping young adults recognize and communicate their strengths
  • Experience in career development, workforce readiness, or case management
  • Skilled in building strong, empathetic relationships with young adults
  • Comfortable coaching through complex life challenges and navigating local systems (e.g., education, workforce, social services)
  • Strong communicator who connects easily with young adults and thrives in a fast-paced, people centered environment
  • Organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple tasks, follow-ups, and caseloads effectively
  • Flexible and persistent, with a “whatever it takes” approach to supporting young adult success
  • Professional experience in nonprofits or meaningful social impact work (paid or volunteer)
  • High energy and a deep alignment with The Collective Blueprint’s mission
Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred; relevant work or life experience may be considered in place of a degree
